The Stansted Park Light Railway is the brain child of Geoff Jago
who, tired of running his quarter scale Denver & Rio Grande 2-8-0
steam locomotive around the very limited circle of track at the
Fareham & District Society of Model Engineers club, decided to
create his own miniature railway. After 2 years spent searching
the area around Chichester and Havant he eventually obtained the
lease on a suitable site in the grounds of Stansted House near
Rowlands Castle in Hampshire. Assisted by three volunteers he
spent the next 2 ½ years building the railway from scratch.
Over the years the group of volunteers has grown to some 16 in number and the locomotive fleet increased to 4
steam and 3 petrol hydraulic locomotives, plus a third scale traction engine.
The pictures above show the progression of the station and it’s platforms during the building. Since its opening,
major improvements to the Railway have included: doubling the track between the Station and Laurel Junction;
increasing the length of Loggers Loop and adding a 12 foot span girder bridge; building a 6 road engine shed
and workshop plus turntable; building a 3 road carriage shed; plus improvements to the Station layout and
facilities.
